Governor Uba Sani: Democracy is an Ongoing Journey

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has described June 12 as a significant moment in Nigeria’s fight for democracy and its continued effort to build a free and just nation. Writing on his verified Facebook page as part of his Democracy Day message, Governor Sani recalled the June 12, 1993 election where Nigerians transcended regional, religious, and ethnic lines to vote overwhelmingly for Chief MKO Abiola in a poll widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history. He stated that this event showcased Nigeria’s unity in diversity and its strong desire for democratic governance. The governor acknowledged that the annulment of that election was a dark period but served as a strong force that mobilized citizens and activists towards the common goal of achieving democracy. He urged reflection on the progress made since the return to democratic rule in 1999, while also recognizing the existing economic and security challenges. Governor Sani expressed confidence that these challenges are not insurmountable and can be overcome through unity, resilience, and determination. He highlighted Kaduna State’s dedication to strengthening democracy through an inclusive and consultative administration focused on transparency, accountability, and placing citizens at the core of its development plans. Governor Sani emphasized that democracy is not a final destination but rather a continuous journey requiring constant vigilance, engagement, and collective participation. He stressed that despite challenges, the shared resolve and belief in democratic ideals must remain steadfast. He called for a renewed commitment to upholding democratic values on Democracy Day and working together for a brighter, more equitable future for Kaduna State and Nigeria, aiming to build a society that improves life for all. He concluded by hoping that the sacrifices of heroes would continue to inspire Nigerians to protect their freedoms and deepen their democracy.
