Democracy Day: Group Calls for Return to June 12, 1993 Unity
As Nigeria observes 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, the Anyi’G Emeya movement has urged citizens to embrace the spirit of unity that characterised the nation on June 12, 1993.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Moses Idika, the group described Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the essence and benefits that democracy should provide. The statement highlighted that democracy should bring peace, security, freedom, free enterprise, industrialisation, improved living standards, patriotism, service, and overall growth.
The movement encouraged Nigerians to assess the practice of democracy using these parameters as a guide for their engagement with political power.
According to the group, June 12 represents the collective will of Nigerians across all political, ethnic, and religious boundaries. It signifies a unified Nigeria, blind to primordial sentiments, and embodies the nation’s shared destiny. The group stated that honouring the true legacy of June 12 means reverting to the foundation of unity that bound Nigeria together on that day in 1993.
The statement also called on residents of Ebonyi State to remain steadfast and have faith in democracy, defined as prioritizing the people, fostering peace, prosperity, sustainable progress, and collective development.
