Five tips to keep your kids cool this weekend

With a heatwave predicted to hit this weekend, parents will be looking for ways to keep their children comfortable and safe. Children are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures than adults, making it crucial to take extra precautions. Here are five essential tips to help ensure your kids stay cool and well during the rising temperatures.

Firstly, it’s vital to ensure adequate hydration. Offer children plenty of fluids throughout the day, such as water, diluted fruit juices, or ice pops made from real fruit. Avoid sugary drinks and caffeine, which can dehydrate them further. Encourage them to drink even if they don’t express thirst, as children can sometimes not recognize the early signs of dehydration.

Secondly, dress children in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton. Light colors are also preferable as they reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it. Hats with wide brims are essential for protecting their faces, necks, and ears from direct sun exposure when outdoors.

Thirdly, plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day. The hottest times are typically between 11 am and 3 pm. If outdoor play is planned, ensure it takes place in the early morning or late afternoon. Seek out shaded areas or use umbrellas and awnings to create cooler spots for them to play.

Fourthly, never leave a child unattended in a parked car. Temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows slightly open. Always double-check the backseat before you leave your vehicle.

Finally, create a cool environment indoors. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun. Use fans or air conditioning if available to maintain a comfortable temperature. Cool baths or showers can also provide immediate relief. Consider dampening a cloth with cool water and applying it to their forehead, neck, or wrists.
