These vibrant, azure marine organisms, scientifically known as Velella velella, have recently graced the shores of Wales, with notable sightings reported in Anglesey, Gwynedd, and Tenby. Commonly referred to as by-the-wind sailors due to their distinctive sail-like structures that catch the wind, these small, colonial hydrozoans are typically found adrift on the open ocean. Their appearance on coastal areas, while beautiful, can be a sign of prevailing wind conditions and currents pushing them ashore. The striking blue color of these creatures is a result of natural pigmentation and the structure of their chitinous sail, creating a visually arresting spectacle for beachgoers. While harmless to humans, their presence in large numbers can indicate shifts in oceanic patterns.
