‘Stunningly beautiful’ blue sea creatures appear on Welsh beaches

Large numbers of a beautiful blue marine creature, known scientifically as Velella velella and commonly called by-the-wind sailors, have recently washed ashore on Welsh coastlines. Sightings have been reported across multiple locations, including beaches in Anglesey, Gwynedd, and Tenby. These small, free-floating hydrozoans, resembling tiny sails, are typically found in warmer oceanic waters. Their appearance on Welsh shores is an unusual event, often triggered by prevailing winds and currents that carry them from their usual habitats. While visually striking due to their vibrant blue coloration, they are not dangerous to humans. Beachgoers are advised to observe them from a distance.
